Entitlement data, not the tool.
Hardware asset tracking is mostly a process problem and gets solved with discipline. Software asset management is different: it depends entirely on reconciling discovered installs against what you are actually entitled to, and entitlement records live in purchase orders, reseller portals, and email threads. The software content library normalises publisher data well, but it cannot invent an entitlement you never recorded. Licence position reports built on incomplete entitlements read as authoritative and are not.

- Usually a small number carry nearly all the audit exposure and cost. Getting those right is worth more than partial coverage of everything, and it is a far smaller data-gathering exercise.
- Where does entitlement data come from, and who keeps it current?
- This is the question that determines whether SAM works. If the answer is "we will backfill it from procurement," the follow-up is who owns it in month six — because an entitlement record that stops being updated makes the reports worse than having none.
- Do you connect asset disposal to the CMDB?
- Worth doing early. An asset lifecycle that ends at "disposed" without retiring the CI leaves ITSM reporting against equipment that no longer exists.
