Custom applications are where platform discipline pays off or comes due. Applications built in global scope, extending core tables directly and using unsupported APIs, work perfectly until an upgrade — at which point they break, and fixing them means understanding decisions nobody documented. The other failure is governance: low-code tooling put in front of business teams with no review produces dozens of overlapping applications, each owned by whoever happened to build it, several of which duplicate each other.

- Scoped, in almost every case. It restricts you to supported interfaces, which is precisely why the application survives upgrades. Global scope should be a deliberate, documented exception rather than a default.
- Extend task, or create a standalone table?
- Extending task inherits SLA, approval, and assignment behaviour for free, and inherits fields you may not want. Standalone gives a clean model and means rebuilding what task already does. Worth deciding per application rather than by habit.
- Who reviews a citizen-developed app before it goes live?
- If the answer is nobody, expect duplication and abandoned applications with production data in them. A lightweight review gate is the difference between low-code being leverage and being technical debt with a friendly interface.
